Product Description:

Complete Electrolytes is a palatable, fully balanced electrolyte that is gentle on the stomach and replaces the 5 key electrolytes sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium in proportion to the amounts lost in sweat during exercise.

Micro-encapsulation Technology means the electrolytes are coated in a thin layer of oil, which means the electrolytes don’t have a salty/off-putting flavor, as palatability problems often limit free-choice intake of salt and electrolytes. Further, micro-encapsulation prevents irritation of the stomach and intestine, as salt intake has also been shown to irritate or cause gastric ulceration in horses (think how salt on a wound feels – of course ulcers would be painful for horses eating regular salt or electrolytes, limiting voluntary intake of salt and electrolytes). Using Microencapsulation Technology means the electrolytes are protected in the stomach and only dissolve in the small intestine - where electrolyte uptake is optimal.

Sub-optimal electrolyte intake is a frequent cause of poor performance in competition horses. The five major electrolytes (sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium) are key nutrients required for nerve and muscle function, maintenance of normal hydration, and normal function of the kidneys, lungs, heart, and digestive system. Sub-optimal electrolyte intake can lead to muscle problems and poor performance, therefore horses in work require extra electrolytes to replace those lost in sweat, feces, and urine. The harder the horse works, the hotter the horse gets. The longer a horse works and the warmer the weather, the more sweat - and therefore the more electrolytes - a horse will lose. One liter of horse sweat contains around 3.5g of sodium, 6g of chloride, 1.2g of potassium and 0.1g of calcium. A horse can easily lose 5 liters of sweat each hour on a normal day at a moderate pace, which equates to the loss of around 50g of electrolytes. This amount would not be replaced by the horses' normal daily hay and hard feed alone.

When your horse has been in months of training and/or high temperatures, it can take weeks or months – not just days - to fully restore the body’s normal electrolyte levels. So the simple answer is to feed electrolytes every day to prevent problems - instead of trying to treat them after the fact. Given regularly and not just during competition helps maintain electrolyte levels, stimulates appetite, encourages drinking, and leads to more consistent performance.
