Dr David Marlin BSc (Hons) PhD
Head Scientist, Equine Physiologist

Dr David Marlin is a graduate of Stirling University in Scotland. He trained with FBHS dressage rider and coach Judy Harvey before going on to obtain his PhD from Loughborough University after studying the responses of horses to exercise and training at the world-famous Animal Health Trust in Newmarket.

He then worked as equine exercise physiologist for racehorse trainer Luca Cumani before returning to The Animal Health Trust as Head of Physiology.

Dr Marlin has worked with the FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale) and IOC (International Olympic Committee) and as a consultant to the British Equestrian Teams since 1994 and has been a member of the World Class Performance Scientific Advisory Group.

Dr Marlin’s recent projects have included a review of the effects of temperature on horses during transport for the British Government, an investigation of welfare in Endurance racing for the FEI, development of testing methods for equine protective leg boots, scientific study of the training methods of Monty Roberts and epidemiological investigations into factors associated with elite equine performance.

He holds the academic position of Professor in Physiology at Oklahoma State University, is the author of over 200 scientific papers and book chapters and is the past Chair of the International Conference on Equine Exercise Physiology.
